Lawn and Garden Maintenance

One of the secrets of a beautiful yard is regular maintenance. A garden that is cared for regularly repays that small investment many times over, enhancing your property, the value of your home and the quality of your life. Looking out of a window at a tidy and well-kept garden lifts the spirits and is a positive boost to your day. We can keep your landscape beautiful all year long.

We have been maintaining gardens in Southern California and Lake Forest for decades, and our services are some of the most reasonable and can be tailored to suit any budget. We take pride in the gardens we care for - they often stand out from their neighbors and become the envy of the neighborhood.

Our Lawn and Garden Maintenance Services include:

Lawn mowing. Keeping your lawn regularly mown not only looks good but keeps down weeds and pests, and ensures a great appearance all year round.  We can arrange a lawn mowing schedule that works for your busy life and your budget.

Lawn maintenance. A healthy and good-looking lawn is always a well maintained lawn. Maintenance includes lawn aeration, re-seeding, fertilization and pest and disease control.
  • Aeration is a process of puncturing holes in the grass and soil to enable the roots to access the nutrients they need. We encourage you to include this in your lawn maintenance routine annually as it makes a big difference to the growth and health of your lawn.

  • Re-seeding lawns is important to fill in bare spots and to create healthy and thick turf that retains moisture better and can stand up to heavy foot traffic. We'll help you select the right variety of seed for your lawn.
  • Regular fertilization of lawns is vital to keep them looking good from season to season. There are many different types of fertilizer that can be used in conjunction with pest and disease control to keep your lawn looking great.
  • Pest, weed and disease control.  Every property is unique and every homeowner is different. That's why we tailor our control programs to the requirements of the customers we serve.

We can tailor the type of lawn care to meet with your requirements:
  • Organic lawn care is designed for customers who prefer to use organic treatments and are prepared to wait for true and lasting results. Our organic lawn program is safe for the environment and, importantly, for children and pets.
  • Hybrid lawn care combines the best of organic lawn treatments and conventional lawn care. This involves minimal chemical use and more weed control than our organic lawn care program. It's safe for animals, people and the environment.
  • Conventional or traditional lawn care is usually the most affordable approach and produces results fast. But over time it can produce chemical buildup and reduce nutrients in the soil and is not as safe and friendly to the environment. It can be useful as part of a holistic approach to lawn care.
  • Bed Maintenance.  All gardens grow, and we are here to help you keep your garden looking its best. We will design a plan that fits your garden's needs, as well as your schedule and budget. Then our team will get to work tidying sloppy garden borders, trimming trees, weeding beds on a regular basis, and fertilizing where and when required to ensure your garden always brings a smile to your face.
  • Drought-Friendly Transformation. Southern California has a lot of sunshine but water is not so plentiful. We have years of experience in transforming lawns to drought-friendly plantings, including native plants, that use much less water and require less maintenance.  We can design a transformation plan that will create the look you want for your garden while saving water and keeping down maintenance costs.

Tree Health Services

Trees are vital for our environment, our homes, yards and communities. Not only do they reduce carbon dioxide in our environment,  and reduce water runoff and soil erosion, they also provide shade for our homes and gardens and bring a sense of calm and peace to our suburbs and open spaces.

But trees in our gardens don't survive as long as they do in natural settings. Most trees in forests can live for many decades, but in the built-up environment of our gardens, they may only live for around 30 years. This shorter life-span is due to the relative isolation of trees from others (contrast the lone tree in a garden to trees in a forest), and the unnatural environment. In addition, any tree care that is provided tends to be in response to a problem, rather than being constant and proactive. Providing long-term care can help trees maintain better overall health and improve their lifespan.

Our arborists have a deep understanding of what trees need to thrive through the seasons and years. They can advise on the best locations, water needs, feeding and maintenance with a proactive approach to giving trees the best life they can have and, in turn, making your garden look its very best.

Our Tree Health Services include:

  • Tree selection, size and placement. We can also obtain rare and specimen trees as needed and plant trees with optimal initial fertilization and irrigation.
  •  Fertilizing. Fertilizer should be applied regularly but will vary depending on your tree's age, condition, needs and the time of year.
  •  Pruning.  Keeping your tree in the correct shape is important and can help the tree stay strong. There are different methods of pruning depending on the tree's needs - these include crown clearing, elevation and restoration. Our arborists can advise the right approach and propose a plan that works best for you and your garden.
  • Disease and Insect Control.   You may not realize that insects and other pests are attacking your trees. It's best to control them early and our pest management programs are an ideal way to do this.

Tree Removal Services

There are many reasons that trees need to be removed. Sometimes the reason will be aesthetic - it will just make the garden look better. Estimates indicate that proper landscaping and tree coverage of a property can improve the value of a home by over 10 percent. Sometimes it is prudent to remove trees that are diseased or at risk of being damaged or toppled by severe weather.

Typically, we remove these trees as required by the owner, but sometimes Mother Nature decides when a tree will fall. Weather is unpredictable, and a severe storm can catch you unawares. High winds can tear off large limbs and can topple even well-established trees. Trees can also fall through disease or damage accumulated over the years. A falling tree or large branches breaking off can cause serious damage to your house or property, and even if there is no damage, the fallen branches or tree will need to be removed as soon as possible. We have special equipment to help removal of large trees and our expert team has long experience in dealing with emergency clean-ups.

Our Tree Removal Services include:
  • Advice on Tree or Limb Removal. Sometimes there is a choice which trees to remove - for example if there is a risk of storm damage to a number of trees, removal of some limbs or weaker trees can mitigate the risk substantially. Our experts can advise on this.
  • Removal of Limbs and Whole Trees.  Our team is not afraid of heights! The same team that will prune or trim the tops of high trees is also skilled at removing large branches, and of course entire trees, no matter what the size. We take great care in this process to avoid injury to you or your property, and of course to our team too. The procedure is always carefully planned and executed to ensure a clean removal and efficient clean-up.
  • Stump Grinding and Removal. Tree stumps can form part of a garden landscape but often they are unsightly and take up space that would be better used for a new tree or other plantings. Our team has the experience and equipment to grind and remove stumps so that in a few weeks it will be hard to see that there was ever a tree there.

Mulch Services

Mulch is essential for healthy gardens. Not only does it look good on plant beds, but it helps retain moisture, keeps weeds down and protects the roots against temperature extremes. It also contributes to soil biology cycle as as it decomposes, helping to create healthy and fertile earth for your plants!

The type of mulch required for your garden will depend on the plants you have. For example, some plants prefer a stone mulch made of gravel or decomposed granite. Others need an organic mulch. Be wary of inorganic mulches such as rubber chips or plastic sheeting as this can destroy the soil's biology and reduce the nutrients available for your plants..

It's best to mulch in the early fall and late spring with a 2-3 inch layer of mulch, but not up against plant stems or tree trunks. Also remember to leave some areas of ground unmulched, as some of our native bees and other beneficial insects are ground burrowers.

Over time,  plants will produce their own mulch in the form of flower parts, decomposing bark and fallen leaves. This is the best mulch and it's best to leave it place to allow for a natural reabsorption of the nutrients back into the soil and to provide a habitat for birds and helpful insects.

Our Mulch Services include:
  • Advice on mulch type and timing.  Our arborists and plant experts will recommend the right type of mulch, and how and when to apply it if you would like to do it yourself.
  • Mulch supply and application. Whether on a one-off basis or as part of a rolling program, we can supply and spread mulch at the right time for your garden.

Hardscaping and Pavers

Part of a great garden are the hard surfaces, such as walks, walkways and driveways, that add texture and contrast to a garden as well as having a really practical function. A paver pathway can add real appeal to a house, and a stone or brick retaining wall gives plenty of character to an otherwise lackluster yard.

Research shows that hardscaping a yard can add substantial value to a house when the time comes to sell. Not only does it bring added interest to a yard, but it is low maintenance and makes enjoyment of the garden just that little bit easier.

Whether you're looking for a simple path or patio around the pool, want to create some eye-catching retaining walls for a cactus or flower garden, or need a large driveway and parking area paved, we are an established paving contractor and can help!

Our Hardscaping Services include:

Paving Advice and Design. Pavers come in many shapes, sizes and substances. Typical pavers are flagstones or cobblestones, stamped concrete pavers, bricks, travertine and other stone shapes. Our expert designers can work with you to select the best pattern, color and stone types to bring your yard to life. There are guidelines for width of paths  - such as 36 inches for a narrow path, or 48 inches to accommodate people walking side by side, but we can customize the final design to your wishes.
  • Paver Installation.  Laying a complex pattern of pavers such as herringbone is complex and requires expert care. We have long experience in hardscaping fine gardens and you will be delighted with the final result, which will last for many years with the minimum of maintenance. As part of the installation we may need to demolish and remove existing concrete or stone paths or walkways. We may also need to install drainage systems, taking into consideration the Lake Forest or other municipal code requirements, as well as the existing gradients to ensure that the paved area and your home stay free from flooding when it rains.

Irrigation and Sprinkler Services

The semi-arid climate of Lake Forest and Southern California in general means that many gardens in these areas would benefit from an automatic irrigation or sprinkler system. These systems can take many forms, from simple drip systems that run from a garden faucet, to fully automated multi-zone systems with full sprinkler and drip capacity. We have experience with them all.

Given the restrictions on water availability, and the municipal codes that regulate the installation of sprinkler systems in Lake Forest and elsewhere, we take great care in the design and planning of irrigation to ensure that we squeeze every last drop out of every last drop! We work on the principle of maximizing efficiency with systems that deliver the right amount of water to the right place at the right time. Doing this is an art and a science and over the years we have become very good at it!

Our Irrigation and Sprinkler Services include:
  • Irrigation and Sprinkler Installation and Maintenance.  Our team is expert in the efficient and effective installation of irrigation and sprinkler systems. We pay close attention to existing structures and pipework, both above and underground, to ensure that we do not interfere with or damage any other systems in the course of the installation. We keep careful record of where pipes are laid and at what depth, so in the future we or can quickly identify points in the system that need attention. For maintenance, or in the event a repair is needed, we have state of the art equipment which can quickly identify leaks or breaks to ensure the system is down no longer than necessary. We also have rolling maintenance programs to ensure that the irrigation and sprinkler systems are always up and running at their optimal efficiency. Every drop of water counts in keeping your garden green and healthy!
  • Irrigation and Sprinkler Design.  To get the most from an irrigation or sprinkler system, the system must be designed for the type and location of plants. It must also be flexible enough to allow for adjustments as the area to be irrigated changes, or the types or sizes of plants change over time. We use state of the art technology in designing irrigation and sprinkler systems, and work closely with our customers to ensure that the final product will meet all of their irrigation needs, both now and in a few years time.
